Your mental health is as important as your physical health. As the mental health authority for Galveston and Brazoria counties, Gulf Coast Center can help if you are having a mental health crisis now or need ongoing support to help you manage an ongoing mental illness.

Our mental health services include a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency and stabilization services, inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care, counseling, and skills and education training. We serve adults, children, and adolescents.

We coordinate patient care activities with other partner community agencies in order to provide well-rounded care. Our goal is to know and understand the needs and preferences of those we serve. Communicating and providing care at the right time and with the right partners helps increase safe, proper, and effective care. Services provided are tailored to each person’s needs.

Documents needed during the screening process

  1. Copy of drivers license or identification card
  2. Social Security card
  3. Proof of residency or current living arrangement (i.e., a household bill)
  4. Proof of income (including spouse income)
  5. Insurance card
  6. Medications
  7. Current contact phone number

Documents needed during the screening process

  1. Child’s birth certificate
  2. Child’s Social Security card
  3. Immunization record
  4. Proof of insurance
  5. Proof of residency
  6. Proof of household income

If applicable, please bring the following:

  1. Court documents
    • Divorce decree
    • Guardianship
    • Foster care
    • Child Protective Services documentation
  2. Hospitalization information
  3. Out-patient psychiatric and/or psychotherapy treatment information
  4. If you would like a medication evaluation with our psychiatrist, please provide the well child check-up paperwork from your child’s pediatrician, dated within the last year. A sports physical will be accepted.

The Youth Empowerment Services Waiver is a 1915(c) Medicaid program that helps children and youth with serious mental, emotional and behavioral difficulties.

The YES Waiver provides intensive services delivered within a strengths-based team planning process called Wraparound. Wraparound builds on family and community support and utilizes YES services to help build your family’s natural support network and connection with your community.

YES services are family-centered, coordinated, and effective at preventing out-of-home placement and promoting lifelong independence and self-defined success.

The program aims to:

  • Reduce the amount of time children are out of their home and community because of a mental health need.
  • Expand available mental health services and supports.
  • Improve the lives of children and youth.

Benefits include:

  • You and your child are supported by a team.
  • Services and supports target your child’s and family’s needs.
  • You and your child can access services that are only available through YES.
  • Supports help your child stay in your home and community.

To participate in the YES waiver, your child must:

  • Be 3 through 18 years old.
  • Have serious mental, emotional and behavioral difficulties.
  • Have a qualifying mental health diagnosis.
  • Be at risk of being placed outside of their home due to their mental health needs.
  • Meet the criteria to be in a psychiatric hospital.
  • Be eligible for Medicaid — parent’s income does not apply.
  • Currently live in a home setting with a legal guardian or on their own if they are legally emancipated.

First step to accessing YES Waiver program is to call Gulf Coast Center’s YES Waiver inquiry line.  All are welcome to call the inquiry line for information purposes.  However, only a parent, guardian or managing conservator can request a youth be added to the inquiry list and assessed for the YES Waiver unless the caller is a legally emancipated youth.
